AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN ART HISTORY RESEARCH & WRITING
Portland State University Art History Department
May 2019
I received this award for my essay Race, Class Difference, and Representation in the Pau-Brasil Work of Tarsila do Amaral. Using a close visual analysis, I discussed Amaral’s landscapes and human representation within them. I also focused on her painting A Negra, comparing it with both Amaral’s self-portraits and a self-portrait by black artist Timótheo da Costa, roughly contemporary with Amaral. While appreciating her achievements and influence in Brazilian art, I questioned her place within the Brazilian culture she depicted, and I attempted to complicate the current simplified perception of her oeuvre.

COLLABORATOR ON EL TENDEDERO (THE CLOTHESLINE)
Portland State University Art History Department
November 2018
I was selected to collaborate with feminist artist Mónica Mayer on the reactivation of her work El Tendedero (The Clothesline), coordinated by the Portland Women in Art Lecture Series (PWALS). Various events, including artist talks, an exhibit, workshops, and creation of a version of The Timeline, were staged at PSU and Portland Community College campuses across the city. The culmination of the series was Mónica Mayer: Translocal Translations, 1978-2018/#MayerPDX2018, a bilingual catalog in which my contributions to the workshop and art reactivation appear. |
JANE KRISTOF AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN ART HISTORY RESEARCH & WRITING
Portland State University Art History Department
May 2018
This prize was awarded for Sonia Delaunay: Rhythm and Movement in Image and Text. The paper explored the early years of Delauany’s career in Paris between the World Wars. I looked at her experiments in abstraction and their expressions in nontraditional art forms. The paper also explores her relationship with poets, especially Blaise Cendrars, and the relationship of text, meaning, color, and form in Delaunay’s work, as well as in collaborations like La Prose du Transsiberien de la Petite Jehanne de France. |
